Olympic Memories: 1988

I am slightly surprised by how little I remember of the Seoul Olympics. They took place over the last two weeks of September, so again I was working during the time that they were on, but I can really only recall two things about that event.

The first thing is, of course, the Ben Johnson saga. To be honest, it didn’t surprise me when he was found to be a drug cheat, although it did surprise me that he was daft enough to allow himself to be caught. In fact, I was so indifferent to the whole event that it was a while before I registered that his disqualification meant that British sprinter Linford Christie had won a silver medal instead of bronze.

The event which really caught my imagination was the men’s hockey, though. For some reason I had paid some attention to the sport in the months before the Games and I knew of most of the members of the team, from the veteran goalkeeper Ian Taylor to the prolific goalscorer Sean Kerley. Whether this was because of a flickering interest in the sport, or because some of the players had interesting careers – captain Richard Dodds was a surgeon, winger Imran Sherwani a newsagent – I do not know. I wasn’t so interested that I saw the gold medal game, though. I found out about that later, too.

All I can think of here is that there must have been a lot of other things going on in my world at this time which seemed important at the time but which I have since completely forgotten.
