Thur Juln XXIV

Brazil beat N.Z 4-0. Don’t hold out much hope for my prediction of W.G. to win cup. Got extended time at school.

I remember being very pleased that my prediction had come true, even though it meant that the All Whites were now out of the competition. Looking back on the Brazil team that played in this game it isn’t as stuffed with stars as I expected it to be and I wonder if one or two were given a rest for this game against a side who had no realistic chance of beating them anyway.

‘Extended time’ simply meant that the school day began late so that those of us who wanted to watch the game could do so. One of the things that I probably should have made clear is that starting the day late didn’t mean that we finished late at the other end. This meant that, in effect, we were watching international football on school time. You can see why I loved that country!
